A game is played between two teams. No more than 12 players per team are permitted on the field at the same time. Each team is allowed one goalkeeper on the field.

PLAYER'S DRESS & EQUIPMENT

All team members shall be dressed uniformly, with the exception of the goalkeeper whose shirt must be the same colour as her team's shirts; the bottom of her uniform must match the predominant colour of her team's uniform bottoms. Each player's uniform shirt shall be numbered, identically, on the front and back. Each team member shall have a different number. Numbers on the centre front of the shirt must be at least 10cm tall; numbers on the centre back of the shirt must be 20cm tall.
All visible garments worn under the kilt/shorts must be of the same predominant colour as the kilt/shorts. All visible garments worn under the top must be the same predominant colour as the top. All players wearing visible undergarments must be dressed in the same colour. This does not apply to medical sleeves.
Players must wear composition or rubber-soled boots/shoes. All players including the goalkeeper must wear a professionally manufactured intra-oral mouth guard. Close-fitting gloves, nose guards, and eye guards may be worn.

FIELD PLAYERS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO WEAR HEADGEAR OR FACE MASKS.

Additional protective devices necessitated on genuine medical grounds may be worn, providing both the Captains and the Umpires agree that such equipment is not dangerous to other players. All protective devices must be close-fitting and padded where necessary. They must not be of excessive weight. The goalkeeper must also wear a helmet with a face mask, a throat protector and a chest or body pad. She may also wear padded gloves, arm pads and leg pads. All padding must fit firmly and must not increase the width of the body beyond the thickness of the padding. The maximum thickness is 3cm. Padded gloves must be tied firmly at the cuff and have no webbing. Players must not wear earrings, necklaces, bracelets or watches on the field of play. Medical jewellery with visible information, soft jewellery and rings must be taped securely to the player or be removed.

THE UMPIRES MAY RULE ANY DECORATION AS DANGEROUS AND REMOVE IT FROM THE FIELD OF PLAY.

No equipment, including protective devices, may be used unless it complies with the rules and is deemed safe by the Umpires.

TO START OR RESTART THE GAME

To start the game and restart the game after halftime and after each goal scored, a Draw is taken at the Centre Line.

To Draw, two opponents stand with one foot toeing the Centre Line. Their crosses are held in the air above hip level, wood/plastic to wood/plastic, parallel to and above the Centre Line. The crosses must be back to back, right wall facing downward, with each player's crosse between the ball and the goal she is defending.

The ball is placed between the crosses by the Umpire. Once the crosses are set, the Umpire will say “Ready” before she begins to move backward out of the circle. The players taking the Draw may not move until the Umpire blows the whistle. At that time, the players must immediately draw their crosses up and away.
The ball must go higher than the heads of the players taking the Draw.
After one caution per game for an illegal Draw by a specific player, the opponent is awarded a Free Position. If both players draw illegally, having each previously received a caution, a Throw is awarded.

During the Free Position, the offending Centre is placed 4m in front of her opponent at a 45 degree angle from the Centre Line. All other players’ feet must be outside the Centre Circle until after the whistle. Following an accident, interference or any unusual circumstances, a Throw may may be taken to restart play.

SCORING

The team scoring the greater number of goals wins.
A goal is scored when the whole ball passes completely over the Goal Line, between the goal posts and under the crossbar from the front having been propelled by the crosse of an attacking field player or the crosse or body of a defender.

A goal is not scored when:

1) the ball is put through the goal by a non-player;
2) the ball comes off the person of an attacking player;
3) the ball enters the goal after the whistle is blown or the horn is sounded;
4) any member of the attacking team steps on or over the Goal Circle line;
5) the goalkeeper, while within the Goal Circle, is interfered with in any way by an attacking player;
6) the Umpire rules the shot or follow-through dangerous;
7) the ball enters the goal while the attacking team has an illegal player(s) on the field;
8) the ball enters the goal from an attacker's illegal crosse;
9) the player who shot the goal adjusts her crosse after an Umpire's request for a crosse inspection;
10) the ball is put through the goal by the goalkeeper of the attacking team (Rule 19A15).

Only one player, either the goalkeeper or the person deputizing for her, is allowed to be grounded in the Goal Circle at any one time. No other player is allowed to have her foot on or over the Goal Circle line at any time. A ball resting on the Goal Circle line is the goalkeeper's.

The goalkeeper, while within the Goal Circle:

1) must clear the ball within 10 seconds after it has entered the Goal Circle;
2) may stop the ball with either hand and/or body as well as her crosse. If she catches the ball with her hand she must put it in her crosse and proceed with the game;
3) must remove a ball lodged in the goal netting or her clothing or pads, place it in her crosse and proceed with the game;
4) may reach out her crosse and bring the ball back into the Goal Circle provided no part of her body is grounded outside the Goal Circle.

When the goalkeeper or anyone deputizing for her is outside the Goal Circle:

1) she loses all her goal keeping privileges;
2) she may only re-enter the Goal Circle without the ball;
3) she may propel the ball into the Goal Circle and then follow it in;
4) she must return to the Goal Circle to play the ball if it is inside the circle.

An unprotected field player:

1) may only enter or remain in the Goal Circle when her team has possession of the ball;
2) must immediately leave the Goal Circle when her team loses possession of the ball;
3) may go into the Goal Circle to play a rolling ball;
4) while within the Goal Circle, must clear the ball within 10 seconds after it has entered the Goal Circle;
5) while within the Goal Circle, must remove a ball lodged in her clothing or crosse, place it in her crosse and proceed with the game.

GOAL CIRCLE FOULS

1) A player must not step on or over the Goal Circle line at any time unless she is deputizing for the goalkeeper.

e) when outside the Goal Circle, step into the Goal Circle with the ball.

PENALTIES FOR GOAL CIRCLE FOULS

1) For all Goal Circle fouls by the defence, EXCEPT an unprotected field player illegally in the Goal Circle, the Free Position is taken 15m out from either side and level with the Goal Line.
2) An unprotected field player illegally in the Goal Circle is a major foul. The Free Position will be awarded at the centre hash mark on the 11m line to the attack player nearest this mark. The offending player is placed 4m behind and the 11m marking area is cleared. The goalkeeper must not return to the Goal Circle until play has restarted.
3) For Goal Circle violations by the attack, the goalkeeper is awarded a Free Position in the Goal Circle. All other players must move at least 4m from the Goal Circle before play resumes.

MINOR FOUL RULES

1) A player must not cover a ground ball with her crosse or body.
2) A player must not guard her crosse with her arm.
3) A player must not touch the ball with her hand or allow any part of her body to change the speed or direction of the ball to her team's distinct advantage, except as in Rule 17B2.
4) A player must not check/tackle an opponent's crosse while the opponent is trying to gain possession of the ball.
5) A player must not throw her crosse under any circumstance.
6) A player must not take part in the game if she is not holding her own crosse.

8) A player must not enter the Centre Circle during the Draw before the Umpire blows her whistle.
9) A player must not intentionally delay the game.

17) A player/goalkeeper must not deliberately direct, propel or carry the ball out-of-bounds.
18) A player must not deliberately commit a false start (move before the Umpire’s whistle and arm signal).

MINOR FOUL PENALTIES

1) For a minor foul the offender is placed 4m from the player taking the Free Position, in the same direction from which she fouled. When the defence commits a minor foul within 15m of goal, the Free Position shall be taken on the 15m Fan on a line which passes from the centre of the Goal Line through the point where the foul occurred.
If a goalkeeper puts the ball in her opponent's goal, the goal does not count and she shall be placed at the Centre Line and the opposing goalkeeper is awarded a Free Position within her Goal Circle.
2) Repeated minor fouls shall be penalized as major fouls. (Repeated is to do a second time.)

MAJOR FOUL RULES

1) A player must not roughly or recklessly check/tackle an opponent’s crosse.
2) A player must not strike an opponent with her crosse or force an opponent’s crosse into the opponent's body.
A Yellow Card MUST be given for a check to the head.
3) A player must not hold her crosse within a field crosse width of an opponent's head or neck.
4) A player must not reach around or across her opponent's body to check her opponent's crosse when she is behind the opponent or level with the opponent.
5) A player possessing the ball must not hold her crosse near her own face or body, or a teammate's face or body, with or without cradling, making a legal check impossible.
6) A player must not charge, block, barge, shoulder, push with the hand or back into an opponent. A player may not move into the path of an opponent without giving the opponent sufficient time to stop or change direction. When a player is running to receive the ball, a defensive player outside the opponent's visual field must give her enough time or space to change direction.
7) A player must not propel the ball or follow through with her crosse in a dangerous or uncontrolled manner at any time.
A Yellow Card MUST be given for dangerously propelling the ball into an opponent.
8) A player must not shoot dangerously or without control.
A dangerous shot is judged on any combination of the shooter's distance from goal, the force of the shot, and/or the placement of the shot. A shot that does not give the goalkeeper time to react, may not be directed at her body, especially the head or neck. This does not apply to a goalkeeper who moves into the path of the shot. A shot may be judged dangerous and/or uncontrolled even if it misses the goal.
9) A player defending must not block the goal outside the Goal Circle with any part of her body so as to obstruct the Free Space to Goal (Diagram 6), which denies the attacking team the chance to shoot safely. This rule is enforced only when the attacking team possesses the ball within 15m of their goal.
10) A player must not detain an opponent at any time by holding, tagging, pressing or pushing against her body, clothing or crosse with her arm, leg, body or crosse. A player must not hold an opponent's crosse after a check to the extent that the opponent's balance or movement is impeded.
11) A player must not trip an opponent deliberately or otherwise.
12) A player must not set a moving or stationary pick (screen) which cannot be seen by the opponent being screened.
13) A player must not swipe at her opponent (See Rule 24). In addition to awarding the appropriate penalty, a Yellow Card MUST be given.
14) The goalkeeper, while outside her Goal Circle, must not blatantly play the ball with any part of her body.
15) A defence player must not remain longer than 3 seconds in the 11m marking area at the front of the Goal Circle unless she is marking an opponent within a stick's length (2m). To be exempt from the 3 second rule, only one defender may mark the same non-ball player in the 11m marking area.
A defender who is marking an unmarked opponent standing directly behind the Goal Circle (See Definitions, diagram 7) is exempt from the 3 second rule. She is not exempt from the Free Space to Goal rule.
The 3 second rule begins when the team in possession crosses the ball over the Centre Line into the attacking half of the field.
16) An unprotected field player may not remain illegally in the Goal Circle. (Rule 18B2)
17) A player may not display inappropriate behaviour.

MAJOR FOUL PENALTIES

1) For a major foul, the offender is placed 4m behind the player taking the Free Position. The Free Position is set up at the spot of the foul, but never closer than 11m to the centre of the Goal Line.
2) If the foul occurs by the defence within the 11m area, but outside the 11m marking area, the Free Position is set up at the closest hash mark and the Penalty Lane is cleared.
3) When the foul occurs by the defence in the 11m marking area, the Free Position is set up at the closest hash mark and all players (bodies and crosses) must clear the 11m marking area (and the Penalty Lane when necessary).
4) If the foul prevented an almost certain goal, the Umpire may move any players positioned between the Free Position and the goal, including the goalkeeper.
5) If any defender is in the Free Space to Goal when a Free Position is set, she should not be penalized for blocking the Free Space To Goal unless she does not immediately move out of this space after the Umpire restarts play.

ADVANTAGE FLAG

A. An Advantage Flag is a Held Whistle for a major foul by the defence when the attacking team is on a Scoring Play within 15m of goal. This includes the 15m Fan and the playing area behind goal, which runs 9m deep and 15m to each side of the centre of the Goal Line.

B. A yellow flag is raised by the Umpire when an attack player, with or without the ball, is fouled on a Scoring Play.

C. The Scoring Play is over when:

1) a shot is taken;
2) the attacking team passes or carries the ball behind the level of the Goal Line and fails to continue the initial momentum to score a goal;
3) the attacking team stops its continuous effort to complete a shot on goal;
4) the attacking team fouls;.
5) the defence commits a subsequent foul which requires the game to be stopped;
6) the attacking team loses possession of the ball.

The Umpire must stop the Scoring Play immediately for a Free Space to Goal violation, or for an unprotected player illegally in the Goal Circle.
While the flag is raised, the Umpire may stop the Scoring Play at any time to prevent injury.

D. Following the Advantage Flag:

1) If a shot on goal is successful, the goal counts;
2) If the attacking team chooses to shoot, the advantage indicated by the flag is complete and play continues;
3) If the Scoring Play ends without a further foul or shot on goal, a Free Position will be awarded to the attack player who was fouled and the penalized defender will be placed 4m behind;
4) If the Scoring Play ends with a further foul:
a) between 11m - 15m in front of goal, the Free Position is awarded where the foul occurred;
b) within 11m in front of the goal (but outside the 11m marking area), the Free Position is awarded on the closest hash mark and the Penalty Lane cleared;
c) within the 11m marking area, the Free Position is awarded on the closest hash mark and the entire 11m marking area is cleared (and the Penalty Lane if necessary);
d) behind goal, the Free Position is awarded on the 11m mark on the Goal Line extension.
5) If any additional fouls by the defence end the Scoring Play, the Free Position is awarded to the attack player who was fouled at the 11m hash mark nearest the most recent foul. The defender who fouled will be placed 4m behind and the Penalty Lane and/or the 11m marking area cleared.
6) If the attacking team fouls (major or minor), a Throw will be taken beyond 15m, level with the Goal Line extension.
7) Whenever the Penalty Lane is cleared and the goalkeeper is outside her Goal Circle and has not fouled, she must return to her Goal Circle.
